Common Questions
Not at all. There are divisions for every level from newcomer to advanced. Many students compete in their first year of dancing. Competing is a fantastic accelerator for your learning and a deeply rewarding experience regardless of your level.
Competition costs include entry fees, coaching, costume, and travel. Costs vary significantly by event and level. We'll walk you through a full cost breakdown during a competition consultation so there are no surprises.
Pro/Am (Professional/Amateur) is a competitive format in which you — the amateur — dance with your professional instructor. It's a powerful way to compete and perform at a high level while continuing to develop your technique. Big Apple Ballroom has trained students for Pro/Am at regional and national events.
A Showcase is a semi-formal in-studio performance event where students perform a rehearsed routine in front of an audience of fellow students, friends, and family. It's a lower-pressure alternative to competition that still delivers the thrill of performing and sets a clear goal for your training.
Start by mentioning your interest in competing to your instructor. They'll evaluate your current level, discuss realistic timelines, and introduce you to the competition preparation curriculum. A competition consultation can be scheduled at any time.
